Rocker Ted Nugent urges boycott of Canada over bear hunt ban

TORONTO (CP) -- American rock star Ted Nugent is feverishly mad at Ontario's decision to ban its spring bear hunt and wants all of Canada to pay for what he calls the province's "tom foolery."

Nugent, an outspoken hunting and pro-gun crusader, said Wednesday he's organizing a boycott of tourism from the U.S.

"Banning the bear hunt has no scientific basis and was inspired by 'lunatic fringe' animal rights groups", he said in an interview.

Nugent, the self-proclaimed Motor City Madman who found fame in the 1970s with the hit Cat Scratch Fever and has sold 30 million albums, also wants the federal government to repeal its gun-control legislation.

TORONTO (CP) -- The World Wildlife Fund has added its voice to those calling for an end to Ontario's annual spring bear hunt, calling the activity degrading and disrespectful of wildlife. As the world's largest conservation group, with no philosophical opposition to hunting, it makes for a powerful addition to the lobby. The spring bear hunt involves no particular skill, fitness or knowledge of nature on the part of hunters, most of whom are American, fund spokesman Monte Hummel said Wednesday.
